Renault's Refactory at Flins, France, is Europe's first circular economy factory dedicated to automotive remanufacturing, refurbishment, and recycling. Opened in 2021, the facility processes approximately 20,000 vehicles annually through four business lines: Re-Trofit (converting used vehicles to electric), Re-Energy (repurposing EV batteries for stationary storage), Re-Cycle (material recovery and recycling), and Re-Start (used vehicle reconditioning for resale). The remanufacturing line processes engines, gearboxes, injection pumps, and turbochargers — each component undergoes complete disassembly, cleaning, inspection, and reconditioning using a combination of semi-destructive and non-destructive methods. Riveted joints and press-fitted bearings are destroyed during disassembly (semi-destructive), while housings, shafts, and gears are preserved and reconditioned (non-destructive). Remanufactured parts are sold through the Renault dealer network at 50-70% of new part prices with equivalent warranties. The facility uses 80% less energy and 88% less water than manufacturing new parts, and is on track to become a zero-waste site by 2030.
