NIKE REUSE-A-SHOE PROGRAM

Focus | PRODUCT Cycle | BIOLOGICAL X1 | REUSE Business Model | PRODUCT ORIENTED Material Flow | CIRCULAR

Nike's Recycling & Donation program, evolving from the 1995 Reuse-a-Shoe initiative, accepts end-of-life footwear and apparel globally. Products are first inspected for donation eligibility; items unsuitable for reuse enter Nike Grind—a state-of-the-art process that separates recycled material by type (rubber, foam, textile) for incorporation into new products, sports surfaces, and retail environments. Over 30 years, Nike has transformed manufacturing scrap and consumer returns into valuable inputs, reducing landfill waste while enabling product take-back at scale. The program demonstrates how established brands can build reverse logistics infrastructure and material recovery systems, turning end-of-life products into circular feedstock.
