K3 ® cup system design has a vertical tear-open side strip which allows consumers to open a product easily by separating the material from the components of plastic and paperboard containers. In this case study, it is possible to see how the Design for Embedded Disassembly strategy facilitates the operation of disassembly of different components and materials. In this specific case, the disassembly is operated to facilitate the recycling of materials but this strategy is also suitable for the maintenance, reuse, refurbishment, remanufacturing, and recycling. The main difference between the different approaches lies in the fact that in the recycling the strategy may be irreversible (Design for Destructive or Semi-Destructive Disassembly), while in all the other approaches it should be reversible or replaceable (Design for Non-Destructive or Semi-Destructive Disassembly).
