Envie is a French network of social enterprises specialising in the collection, refurbishment, and resale of domestic appliances. Founded in 1984, the network now operates 50 workshops across France employing over 2,500 people, many from disadvantaged backgrounds, in the technical refurbishment of washing machines, refrigerators, ovens, and other white goods. Each year, Envie processes approximately 260,000 appliances, diverting them from waste streams and making affordable, quality-tested products available to low-income households at 30-50% below new retail prices. All refurbished products carry a minimum one-year warranty. Envie's model integrates social inclusion with circular economy principles: workers receive formal training in appliance repair and diagnostics, creating transferable skills. The network operates in partnership with French waste management authorities and manufacturers who channel end-of-life appliances to Envie rather than to recycling. Envie demonstrates how refurbishment can simultaneously address environmental sustainability, social equity, and consumer affordability — the three pillars of sustainable development.
